MY SUMMER UNIFORM

Shopping has always been a hobby of mine. Like many of you, I switched to online shopping once the pandemic began. As a result, I have spent a significant amount of time each week returning items to the UPS store. In my world, UPS stands for Unwanted Personal Stuff. Keeping track of the paperwork generated by my numerous purchases and returns has made me feel like a junior bookkeeper – definitely not something I enjoy. The transaction records on my credit card statements show a consistent pattern – Purchased and Returned. I keep waiting for one of my favorite stores to send me a letter requesting that I stop buying things.

“My Summer Uniform” may sound like a strange title for this post. No, I am not working a summer job at McDonald’s or See’s Candy. I have no doubt that I will be visiting McDonald’s and See’s this summer, however, this title refers to the clothing I will be wearing once the hot weather begins.

I have already purchased a number of items in preparation for summer and found a way to significantly reduce the number of trips to UPS. I have decided that I will limit myself to wearing just t-shirts and jeans every day. This simplifies things – kind of like Garanimals for senior women. I started by buying an oversized v-neck t-shirt from the company, Life is Good, and discovered that I can tuck one corner into the right front pocket of the jeans which resulted in my version of a t-shirt blouse. My additional purchases were all solid colored t-shirts, many are shades of brown and black, because I like eating chocolate and we are talking summer.

The only item in my uniform which has been difficult to find is a pair of lightweight white leather tennis shoes. Not that there aren’t many choices available online- I just have unhappy and oddly shaped feet which resulted from 30 years of teaching in fashionable but toe crunching shoes. Hopefully, my online shoe choice will work so that I don’t have to become a UPS frequent flyer again.

The unexpected benefit of my uniform is that none of my friends will feel the need to say “Nice outfit” or “Where did you get your top/jeans?” since they will basically keep seeing variations of the same items over and over. Instead they can just think ” Oh, yeah, it’s her summer uniform”.
