Recently, while clearing out an upstairs room in our home, I discovered an old karaoke machine. Being as we are planning on entertaining outside this summer, this discovery sparked my interest. It turns out that the machine was bought for my husband’s children many years ago. It clearly had seen better days as evidenced by countless scratched cds, and the fact that the words which were faintly displayed on the screen were somewhat blocked by a large rotating black line. This non-functioning machine did not exactly scream “party time.”
We spent the next few days researching the numerous variations of karaoke machines available. Wired microphones, wireless microphones, Bluetooth compatible, iPad compatible, apps for music, and downloads from YouTube – so many variables. We finally found a replacement machine which would not require us to hire an IT person just to turn it on. We also purchased several old school CD+Gs which will provide 150 song choices from the 60’s and 70’s.
I feel the need to state for the record, that although I love music, I cannot carry a tune. To clarify my point, let us just say that it has been requested many times in my life that I not sing. When I tried out for the chorus in middle school, the teacher listened as I sang and with a pained look on her face announced that she could not figure out what my “range” was. Perhaps one of the primary reasons I enjoy Dodger games (besides eating a hot dog) is because I can sing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” and “The Star Spangled Banner” without anyone hearing me. Let’s just say that it is all about volume, not quality.
For those of you who may visit our home this summer, I apologize in advance. The good news is that you won’t have to worry about seeing any of the wild animals that populate our neighborhood – they will be at the CVS down the street, trying to find earplugs.
