Lately, it seems that we are bombarded with a multitude of frightening world events and issues which have caused us to live with fear and anxiety. This makes it very difficult to notice, let alone enjoy, the everyday common events that occur. Personally, I keep trying to look for the things in my life that create positive feelings, but as they say, “It ain’t easy.”
A few months ago, I bought a tomato plant – I don’t really care for the taste of tomatoes – I just like the way the little guys look. Our yard has countless beautiful flowering plants, so my little tomato bush was a unique addition. Intellectually, I knew that with proper care this plant would produce tiny red growths just like the photo on the tag, and yet I was overwhelmed with delight at the sight of the very first baby tomato.
My daughter recently made chocolate chip muffins. The recipe was originally given to me by my mother, and I in turn gave it to my daughter. A few days ago, I visited my grandson who announced that they were the best muffins ever and that he was going to eat all 24 of them himself – hopefully not at the same time. I could tell that he would not be eager to share them with visitors, but being as I am his grandmother, I was granted special privileges. In the process of devouring the entire muffin, wonderful memories associated with this recipe flooded my mind.
Last week, I decided at the last minute that I wanted a pedicure, but my usual salon was booked. I found a shop that had an opening and was delighted with the results. Not a big deal in the scheme of life, but a really nice surprise.
None of these events changed my life – I still do not care for tomatoes and my polish, which looked great, will show signs of wear within a week. The chocolate chip muffin was, well, just a muffin with who knows how many calories. Compared to all of the big issues that we are all faced with every day, these events were all little things, but they made me happy.
And that is good enough for me.
