“NOTHING PERSONAL”

I think that texting is a good tool for communicating information – not so much for conveying feelings. Between the lack of affect and the random words that Siri selects in her attempt to transmit what she hears, the possibilities for miscommunication are endless.

As a writer, I know how powerful words can be, which is why I edit my work so many times. I am honestly more concerned about the meaning of my words than commas and hyphens, which I am sure some of you have noticed. Sorry, grammar fans!

Many people have certain common words or phrases that annoy or offend them. Words that are mispronounced or misused do not bother me. Maybe it is because I listened to children for 30 years, so I am used to deciphering words without judgement. There is, however, one phrase that I find offensive.

I do not know how you feel when someone starts a sentence with the words “nothing personal,” but from my experience it means they are going to say something that potentially will be unkind and or/insensitive. I cannot for the life of me figure out how something negative which is directed at another person cannot be taken as personal. The last time I heard this phrase, I was definitely a person and what followed was hardly “nothing.”

With the lack of kindness we see displayed every single day through the media, I feel that it is more important than ever for us to show more awareness and sensitivity towards others through our actions and words. Any small act of kindness we show to others, whether it is as simple as a smile or extending a helpful hand, makes a difference. And that, my friends, is personal to everyone.
