I had my first microdermabrasion treatment when I was in my thirties – basically it is pretty much like having your face vacuumed with a small wand. It is not a miracle procedure, but it does gently remove all of the “stuff” which has accumulated on your skin. Microdermabrasion does give a smoother, more youthful look, but it is pricey, and needs to be done regularly in order to make a significant difference.
The following is from an article I just read on reducing skin aging from the Academy of Dermatology Association titled, “11 Ways to Reduce Premature Skin Aging.” My reactions/comments are in parentheses.
1. Protect your skin from the sun every day – buy a wide brimmed hat, wear long sleeved shirts, and seek shade. (In other words, stay inside.)
2. Apply self-tanner rather than get a tan. (Get used to orange skin that has a very strange smell.)
3. If you smoke, stop. (That one was easy – not a smoker.)
4. Avoid repetitive facial expressions. (Reduce smiling, laughing, squinting, frowning, and eating, or just Botox your entire face.)
5. Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet. (That’s not happening until chocolate becomes a food group.)
6. Drink less alcohol. (Guess I will stop swallowing mouthwash.)
7. Exercise most days of the week. (Another thing that is not happening.)
8. Cleanse your skin carefully. (Finally, something I do.)
9. Wash your face twice a day and after sweating heavily. (If you are in menopause, just stay near a sink all day.)
10. Apply moisturizer every day. (If you can remember.)
11. Stop using skin care products that sting or burn. (In other words, do not coat your face with hand sanitizer.)
Unfortunately, now that I have reread this post, I am frowning. So much for #4.
