As children, our family occasionally ate “out” and the choices were mostly Italian and Chinese food. We never ate Mexican food when I was growing up – I am not even sure if my mom even knew what a taco was. As a result, I actually developed my love of tacos, burritos, and enchiladas after I started college.
In 1970, the soap opera All My Children began. My family quickly became fans and gathered around the television to watch the constant drama between Susan Lucci and her co-stars. During my first year at college, one of my best friends and I actually scheduled our classes around this popular show. While other students were eating lunch out of vending machines, we drove to Taco Bell. My friend and I each ordered a bean burrito and a Coke, and then drove to her aunt’s home nearby to watch the beautiful Susan Lucci (who probably would not have eaten a cheese and fat laden burrito if her live depended on it.) With the help of a VCR, I continued to watch AMC until the show ended in 2011.
Through the years I moved up the food chain from Taco Bell to Del Taco to El Torito. I continue to eat Mexican food whenever possible, but nothing beats the memories of All My Children and burritos.
To me, every day is Taco Tuesday.
