I recently made plans to meet a friend at a restaurant which we have patronized for the past 15 years. The menu is extensive and the atmosphere has always been charming and pleasant – until a few weeks ago.

Let me just say that I am not a person who discusses politics with other people, with the exception of my immediate family. This is not to say that I do not have my own political beliefs, I just choose not to discuss them with most people.

Now, back to my restaurant story. I arrived a few minutes early and due to the recent Covid surge, chose a corner table on the patio which was a considerable distance from the other tables. Within a few minutes the number of people in the patio area increased and a conversation about who in the group was carrying a loaded gun was clearly audible – Strike One. Soon there were about 25 people standing in the small patio area within a foot of my table.

I asked a server about the growing number of people and was told that they were waiting to go inside for a political meeting. At one point, an elderly woman came over to me and asked me if I was there for ”the meeting.” I replied that I was not, and that I belonged to a different party. She smiled at me and said, ”You will be joining us soon” – Strike Two.

When I arrived home, I Googled the restaurant and found that they host political meetings on weekends twice a month – Strike Three.

I have ordered many patty melts in my life, but never with a side of politics.
