SHOTS IN THE DARK

My daughter and I have maintained a tradition of buying season play tickets together. As a result of the pandemic, several of next season’s plays are the same ones that we saw several years ago. We have decided to take a break and just buy tickets to individual plays next year. We recently attended the last play of this year, which was “Oklahoma!”.

Several weeks prior to the play, we received a lengthy email from the venue in which they explained some format changes, and that theatre prop guns would be used three times during the performance. I have found a number of articles written during the past few years regarding mass panic in theaters due to the sound of gunfire during a production.

I am guessing that most of the people attending our performance read the email prior to seeing “Oklahoma!” since there was very little movement and no audible gasps among the audience members. Personally, I was bracing myself and keeping count of the gunshots as the play progressed.

In contrast to “Oklahoma!”, our next play will be “Lion King” – no bullets, just a package of Kleenex.
