My daughter recently sent me an email about the need to download a security update for all Apple products. Based on prior security alerts, I assumed that “patching” this issue would be fairly quick and easy. I started with my phone, which was simple, but it did take 45 minutes to complete. I followed the same procedure simultaneously with my two iPads and passed the time guessing which one would finish first. (The mini won.)
It was about 9:00 p.m. when I began to update my laptop, AKA contestant number four. After an hour of frustration, I still could not download the security fix on my laptop. It took another 45 minutes to discover that my operating system had stopped allowing security updates in 2020, which meant that I needed to download a new system. Deciding whether to choose “os Catalina” or ”os Ventura” took until 11:15 p.m. At this point, I really wanted to choose “os Go to Sleep” but settled on “Ventura.” Once the installation was complete, 45 minutes were spent checking my computer to verify that no information was lost during my fourth and final technology adventure.
Updating my devices reminded me of the sixties sitcom where the passengers were expecting a three-hour tour and ended up stranded.
Welcome to Apple Island.
