CHECK THIS OUT

Up until recently, when people spoke about the market, they were usually referring to the stock market. Times have changed, and we now have a new topic of conversation – the supermarket.

As many of you have noticed, the number of people working at checkout counters has dwindled considerably while the number of self-checkout stations has grown in response. These changes have impacted shoppers both physically and socially. No more friendly checkers and baggers – just a screen that says “WELCOME.” Couldn’t we at least be greeted with a computerized voice asking “How is your day?”or “Did you get everything you needed?”

In light of these changes, I have decided to treat this new checkout experience like a game. The goal is to see how fast you can find the QR code and scan it without making the machine crazy. If the scanner cannot keep up, then the item causes the conveyor belt to reverse direction and send it back to the scanner which means that you will have to scan it again. This will affect your perfect score and lower your ranking among the other checkout “contestants.”

Here is a tip if you really miss human contact during your market experience. Buy a bottle of wine. The machine has no idea how old you are and will cease to function until an employee comes over to take your wine to a station where they will ask you about your day and you will happily pay them.

Once you have completed the checkout game, you get to play how many bags do I need and lastly, how do I arrange all of the groceries without smashing the eggs, and preventing the bag of potato chips from turning into micro chips.

Believe me, by the time you get home, you will be glad you bought the wine.
