BARBIE DOLLS

Due to the release of a new movie about Barbie, this iconic doll has received a tremendous amount of media attention. Whether her hair is brown or blonde, regardless of her pretty clothing or lack of clothing, she has been the standard for beauty and perfection for many generations of women. The fact that very few of us actually looked anything like her didn’t seem to matter.

My parents gave my daughter a large collection of Barbie dolls when she was young. Shortly after arriving in her bedroom, the tiny shoes and fancy clothes were usually discarded. It didn’t take long before each Barbie’s beautifully arranged hair stood out from her head as if she had put her finger into an electrical outlet – multiple times. My daughter’s dolls clearly did not reflect perfection. They looked more like Barbies who had spent the night drinking too many margaritas.

The very first Barbie was sold in 1959. Through the years, this iconic toy has seen many changes. Today’s dolls come in a variety of body types – original, curvy, petite, and tall. There are actually 176 different variations in the current Barbie line.

As females, many of us spent countless hours trying to look like Barbie. It took 57 years for Barbie to more accurately represent the girls who strived to achieve her appearance. In that respect, you’ve come a long way, baby. However, in spite of progress, Barbie has one outstanding flaw.

She still can’t put her feet on the ground.
