A few days ago, I attended a lovely bridal shower. I have not been to a shower recently, being that most of my friends have children who were married many years ago. It turned out that there were actually two showers going on – the one inside and the one outside.
I have lived in the same location most of my life, and up until a year ago, we have rarely experienced significant amounts of rain. Weather forecasters have typically been the source of jokes since “storm watch” usually meant that you could count the number of raindrops. Out of caution, I put the large gift in a plastic trash bag to protect it. Not exactly the look I was going for, but it made sense.
What I did not count on was driving in a huge rain storm, not knowing how to turn on the front windshield defroster, and a malfunctioning parking meter. As I approached the meter, I noticed that the screen was clouded (not unlike my windshield), which made it impossible to see the directions. The woman parking in front of me explained that her meter was definitely not working, since, unlike my meter, there was no red light indicating the need for her to insert a credit card. We were both standing in the rain for several minutes when I sprinted into the restaurant to deposit my now partly soggy gift. Just as I ran back to my car, a parking enforcement officer pulled up in preparation to issue a ticket. I quickly explained my dilemma and she gave me an envelope to place near the window inside my car so that I would not be fined.
I learned several things that day. First, sometimes meteorologists are correct. Second, even when your car has the ability to understand auditory commands, a defroster is apparently called a deicer. Third, beware of cloudy parking meters.
Mostly, I learned that unlike messy rain showers, bridal showers are delightful.
