GUARD DOG

Like many of you, I often have conversations with my dog. She is a great listener, as evidenced by the intense way that she looks directly in my eyes regardless of the topic of my conversation. Occasionally, she tilts her head to the side which I interpret as her quest to understand my words, but the most likely cause is boredom.

A few nights ago, Bella was roaming around our bedroom looking for anything interesting that might have fallen on the ground. Until that night, her treasures included an AAA card and a stale piece of popcorn. Being as she usually jumps up and down at the side of our bed (think Tigger), it was unusual for her to still be on the floor after 20 minutes.

As I looked to see what she was doing, I noticed my custom made night guard hanging out of her mouth. I yelled for my husband to help me grab her and retrieve her new $800 chew toy. Needless to say, there was no way she was giving up her best discovery ever, despite my useless explanations as to why she needed to surrender her intriguing find.

I ran down the stairs and quickly returned with a small piece of chicken in an attempt to exchange the chicken for my expensive night guard. After a few minutes I was able to grab my now dog spit laden appliance which was instantly soaked in disinfectant. In trying to analyze how the dog thief ended up with my guard, it appeared that must have I hit the open mouthguard case which was resting on my nightstand, which in turn caused the contents to fly onto the floor.

I am grateful that the drama ended on a positive note – no damage was done and no further accusations of theft were necessary. If things had gone differently, someone would be receiving less dog treats for quite some time.

This event gives new meaning to the term “guard dog”.
