A few days ago we lost the electricity in our home. We assumed that just like previous experiences, power would be restored somewhat quickly. Being as it was only one o’clock in the afternoon, there was no rush to locate the multitude of flashlights and mini lanterns stored in various closets and drawers.
By five o’clock the decision to abandon my plan to make dinner was made. We strategically placed light sources around the house so that the dog could easily find her way. I think that providing light was more for our peace of mind than for the dog, since she is capable of seeing the tiniest speck of food in any floor surface regardless of how dark it is.
Unlike our previous experiences with power outages, this one lasted over 13 hours. I learned that if you do not open the refrigerator doors, frozen items can last 24 hours and that refrigerated items can survive four hours. There are some exceptions, so if you want to get creative and eat a sandwich made of condiments, you will be fine. Personally, I am not a big fan of peanut butter, soy sauce and lemon juice, so heading to a restaurant was a good choice.
Once the lights came back on, I did a victory shoutout and fell asleep. Within an hour, the Ring doorbell, which was now working again, went off since it located an intruder in the backyard. Apparently a very large raccoon must have noticed that the lights were now on and decided to take a selfie.
I would rather be woken up by a furry “poser” (someone who tries to impress others) than have the power off.
