TRASHCAN DERBY

We live in a windy city – make that an extremely windy city. It is not unusual to be woken up at night by the sound of howling (non-dog related) and thoughts that “We are not in Kansas anymore.” As a result, our neighbors are used to the tops of city trashcans blowing off and some of the contents ending up on the street.

Last week, we received a wind warning which did not seem much worse that the ones we have received in the past, so we placed our trashcans at the curb the evening before the scheduled pickup. Unfortunately, the winds surpassed our expectations, and the next morning all three receptacles were nowhere in sight. The trash truck driver informed me that about 12 trashcans had relocated themselves at the bottom of the hill. At this point, I was on a mission, and it didn’t occur to me that there was a good reason why I was the only person trying to locate trashcans. What I didn’t count on was the fact that trying to maneuver the 20 pound black and green trash cans in 40 mile an hour winds would not be easy. I discovered that our missing cans were not among this renegade collection. So I began walking up the hill towards our home, stopping several times, since the fierce winds were clearly not supporting my ill-fated attempt. At this point, I started to question how much it would cost to simply replace the “fill in the four letter word cans.” On the way back, I discovered all three of our missing trashcans laying on the other side of the street. One by one, I dragged them to our house and then collapsed on the couch.

Yesterday, was once again trash day, and even though no gale force winds were predicted, they were still quite strong. This time I sprinted out the front door like a horse in the Kentucky Derby and grabbed the trash cans as soon as they were emptied.

No more trashcan derbies for me.
