MYSTERY ENVELOPE

Last week around 9:30 p.m., I received a message from the person who purchased my home seven years ago. The text stated that she received some mail addressed to me and the attached photo clearly indicated that it was important. The item would be waiting for me in her mailbox.

Seeing the words United States Treasury Official Business immediately set off warning bells in my half-asleep brain. Upon quickly researching the government source who sent the envelope, I discovered that the contents most likely had something to do with money that I owed to the government.

Being as I am a person who solves problems that have not yet happened, my brain was now in full gear. I could wait until the morning to pick up the envelope, or hop in the car and hopefully avoid spending the night worrying about owing some life changing amount of money.

After driving to my former residence, I opened the mailbox knowing that several neighborhood Ring doorbells were recording what appeared to be a badly dressed middle-aged woman stealing mail in the dark. As I ripped open the envelope, a check from the United States Treasury for fifty dollars fell out – no cover letter explaining the contents.

And it remains a mystery envelope.
