Like many of you, I have heard the phrase “aging gracefully” used many times. From my perspective, the words aging and gracefully are not compatible.
Here are some reasons why I feel this way:
- Spending four weeks watching a skunk stripe form at the top of your head and then spending two hours covering it up every month.
- Your teeth taking turns developing cracks which need crowns, and root canals, extractions on a regular basis.
- Putting on eyeliner and noticing within one hour that the single dark line at the end of your eye has now formed a group of intersecting lines resembling a road map.
- Walking up stairs and hearing creaking sounds coming from your knees which are loud enough to inform your dog of your location.
- Buying green liquid capsules of Advil because it resembles candy, not medicine.
I am definitely aging, and I am still somewhat graceful, but “aging gracefully”?
I don’t think so.
