THE GAMES PEOPLE PLAY NOW

The first time someone explained Wordle to me, I thought “sounds like a fun game”. The words addicting, frustrating, and esteem- lowering did not come to mind. On the days when I am able to guess the correct word in less than 6 tries, I feel pretty good. On those days when I am not successful, I launch into a “how did I not get that” mindset. I must admit that when the game first became popular many of the words were British and I could cut myself some slack, being as the only British experience I have ever had was eating a scone. Now that the New York Times is publishing the game, my excuses for not solving the daily puzzle are severely limited. Prior to Wordle, it was common to greet people with “How are you?” Now our opening line is “How many tries did it take you to get today’s Wordle?” Talk about performance anxiety!

Another game which has developed a significant following is Wordscapes. The advantage of this crossword-like game is that you can be successful in guessing most of the words. The more puzzles you complete, the more opportunities for clues you are given. The game is free but you must endure countless advertisements unless you are willing to pay a fee for an “ad free” experience. After watching the continuous ads for Candy Crush approximately 100 times , there is no way I will be downloading any more online games. The best ad I have seen is the one that states that 10 minutes of playing these games daily will increase your brain power. After 350 rounds of playing Wordscapes, I should be a card carrying member of Mensa and my blogs should be Nobel Prize worthy.

I have found that there is one positive side effect when playing these word games. My dog is more cooperative now that I am sitting in one spot for hours at a time. I think she likes the fact as long as I am playing, she does not have to keep getting up and down to follow me around the house. Maybe she will be so happy that my socks will stop disappearing.
