I have always been a believer that timing is a critical element in life. Just as we see a traffic accident occur and think “wow I just missed that” or we found the last package of toilet paper on the shelf during the pandemic, timing is important. There have been many events in my life when “being in the right place, at the right time”, led to surprising outcomes.
One of the most amazing examples of timing occurred late in my life. After my husband died unexpectedly, I was barely holding myself together. The words “completely overwhelmed” do not even begin to explain my state of mind. A colleague suggested that I attend a grief group shortly after I became a widow. To say that I was not enthusiastic about this idea is a major understatement. One of my closest friends stayed on the phone with me the entire time I was driving to my first meeting. How she was able to listen to me as I repeatedly threatened to turn the car around and go home is still a mystery to me. I called the group leader as soon as I got home and explained why the group was not a good choice for me. She made me promise to come to three meetings before I made a decision. What I could not have known was that the man who would become my future husband was also contemplating abandoning the group.
I decided to join the other members for dinner prior to my third meeting. Since I was the “newbie”, many questions were asked. My future husband was intently listening to the Q and A session that was taking place during that dinner and discovered that we lived within a few miles of each other and that our children had attended the same private elementary school where I had been teaching for the past 28 years. Our story had numerous twists and turns but suffice to say, it had a happy ending.
It is all about the timing.
