I used to label myself as a control freak. After reading a list of synonyms for this term, I now define myself as a tenacious person who enjoys control – which almost sounds like a good thing. Not only do I want to control my world, I am willing to devote endless energy towards achieving this goal. Just reading that last sentence makes me want to take a nap.
The funny thing is that in spite of my quest for control, I have always been attracted to catchy phrases like “whatever will be, will be” (from the song Que Sera, Sera) and “it is what it is” (the motto of Maui). A beautifully colored mini poster with the words “the only thing in life that we can control is ourselves” is prominently displayed in my office.
I know that a few of you who are reading this post share my control-seeking attributes. Maybe we should get together and listen to Doris Day sing Que Sera, Sera while coloring posters and proclaiming ”It is what it is.”
I will bring the colored pencils.
