I remember having conversations with my daughter when she was nine years old. They often focused on clothing, her friends, and occasionally school. I could easily follow her comments because, although I may not have always enjoyed her perspective, I always understood her words.
Fast forward to my nine-year-old grandson. Between the names of the 800 Pokémon characters , the various “switch” games, and the robotics terminology, I am sure my eyes resemble those of a beanie baby as I try to understand what he is explaining to me. We have now reached the point that when I buy him gifts per my daughter’s suggestions, I often have no clue as to what I am buying.
Last week our smoke alarm started chirping – a sound that makes me want to scream. In spite of my husband’s attempts to dissuade me from climbing on a ladder and dismantling the alarm on the ceiling, I persisted. After a few minutes, I located the well-hidden compartment and ripped out the battery. For me, this was a wonderful electronic victory. I am sure that my grandson would not see this as an accomplishment, unless I created a robot that was capable of stopping a chirping alarm remotely.
For now, I will continue my version of an electronic challenge and change two burnt out lightbulbs.
