AN EVERYTHING, EVERYWHERE, ALL AT ONCE KIND OF LIFE

We recently watched the movie “Everything, Everywhere, All at Once.” I knew that it had won numerous Academy Awards but had absolutely no idea what the movie was about. After watching the entire movie, my husband still had no idea what the movie was about – which I am sure was a common reaction among many people.

On the other hand, although I found myself confused at times, something emotional resonated for me throughout the film. It took me until the next day to be able to identify why I connected with this seemingly frenetic movie.

There have been times in my life when I literally found myself going in too many directions all at the same time. I am sure many of you have found yourselves in this situation. For example, at one point in my life, I was working long hours at a demanding job, while trying to help my daughter with her newborn son, while monitoring new caregivers for my aging parents, while being supportive of a husband who was declining from a disease which eventually ended his life. I used to tell my family that they had to take turns falling apart, but life just doesn’t work that way.

The main character in this movie found herself juggling many pressing issues and struggled to find ways to make it all work in highly unconventional ways. We have all found ourselves overwhelmed with responsibilities, exhaustion, and emotion at times. Our super powers were resilience and sheer determination.

Sometimes, life really is everything, everywhere, all at once.
