A few weeks ago, we met friends at a local restaurant for dinner. My husband and I have been to this restaurant many times, and although the servers are all really efficient and friendly, there is one who stands out. His sense of humor and warmth make him a true favorite which is why we choose to sit in his “section.”
When our friend’s chicken pot pie entree was brought to the table, he could not get over the size of the dish – it was basically a pasta bowl with a light brown crust completely covering the top and extending down the sides. He asked the server how he was going to take home the leftovers, to which our server replied “You can’t leave until you eat the whole thing.”
At the end of the meal, our friend tried to figure out how to transfer the significant uneaten portion into the large, clear plastic container designed for leftovers. He made a comment about taking the bowl home, and much to our surprise, our server picked up the entire bowl and placed it in the container. When we realized that our friend’s leftover dinner was in fact going home in the restaurant’s bowl, we looked at each other in disbelief. I could see the headline – “Seniors Smuggle Bowl From Local Restaurant.”
A few minutes ago I received a text from our friend – they returned the bowl to the restaurant tonight via a large unmarked purse. It was a skillful undercover maneuver which gives me new appreciation for my friends.
I can’t wait to see what they leave with next time.
