A few weeks ago, several cute and very well-behaved canines were sitting near us during an outdoor brunch with our family. One of the dogs gave a few soft barks which prompted me to ask our four-year-old grandchild if he had any idea what the dog was actually saying. Somehow this question led to a very amusing conversation which resulted with both of us barking. If you consider the fact that in dog years I am actually ten, it makes my behavior somewhat age appropriate.
Many dog lovers, myself included, spend a considerable amount of time talking to our dogs. How much these pampered pooches comprehend is questionable. Our dog clearly understands when I tell her that we have received a UPS package because she runs to the front door and jumps up and down like Tigger. What she does not understand is that in spite of my explanations, when a sock falls out of the dryer, it is not an invitation to play a game of finder’s keepers, and that barking and growling at the paper shredder will not intimidate it.
My efforts to understand our dog, although challenging, will continue. At the moment, I am trying to convince her to give me back the Visa bill which fell on the floor – unless she plans on paying it.
It’s a dog’s life.
