In our complicated world, there are so many things we don’t understand – how meteorologists predict clear skies minutes before it starts hailing, why dogs keep trying to play with humans who dislike them, and my personal choice – other people, just to name a few.
We are surrounded by humans from the minute we are born, and yet many of us spend an inordinate amount of time trying to understand the people we encounter. Sometimes no amount of effort can help us comprehend why some individuals exhibit certain behaviors.
The reality is that in spite of the fact that we want to make sense of a person’s behavior, we do not need to understand it – unless we have a master’s degree in psychology and are charging two hundred dollars an hour.
In the early 70’s Thomas Harris wrote “I’m OK, You’re OK”, which became a very popular self-help book. Thomas explained in simple terminology how people could better understand themselves and each other. One of my close friends and I read this book when we were in our early twenties and decided that we had a more accurate title. In light of my experiences during the past fifty years, I think that our “retitle” reflected great insight.
“I’M NOT OK, AND NEITHER ARE YOU”.
